Today, I am pleased to welcome Veronica Breville, author of A Banshee's Tale, to Melissa’s Eclectic Bookshelf. And don't forget to read all the way to the bottom for an Awesome Giveaway!!!
Have you ever had a dream that just stuck with you? Or, perhaps, one that kept infiltrating your nocturnal musings time and again? Well, I have...and still do. It's a good dream. The kind that makes you smile when you think of it and recall smells, sights, and sounds so acutely that you could swear you've been there. It's become my happy place. A little girl on a tree swing that sits just below a white house on a hill. You can smell the sea and there's a widow's walk around part of the roof line. It's the girl's home or something very near it. When I wake I feel refreshed and peaceful.
Why tell you all of this? Probably because from this little recurring dream came part of the idea for A Banshee's Tale. Well, that and a never ending love of my Irish heritage. The myths and legends from the Emerald Isle are rich in fantasy and heroism. I took that and ran with it, reworking the banshee myth to fit my particular wants. It was fun and a little nerve wrecking to mold something so eerie into my main character, Catherine.
Throughout the book there are mentions of other mythical creatures, though the antagonists, the Badbeh are my creation completely. They don't shine brightly in this first book but rest assured they will become more of a presence in the sequel.
Writing A Banshee's Tale was a lesson in patience, perseverance, and humility. I hadn't written in such a long time that showing anyone what I'd managed to get on paper was more than frightening. Thankfully, I have an amazing support group and I received some very constructive criticism that has made my writing so much better. I think my writing style has changed even since the final edit of the book, and that's saying something.
I hope any and all who take the time to read A Banshee's Tale enjoy it and take something from it. It will always be something I'm proud of, even as my writing gets better. And remember, a story begins with the smallest seed of a thought. A dream, a word, a picture...they can all lead you on a written journey that can entertain and amaze you and others.
Thanks for the support, and thank you, Melissa for taking time out to have me post today!
