Today, I am pleased to welcome Tim Andrewartha, author of Vitality, to Melissa’s Eclectic Bookshelf.
Have you ever moved to an unfamiliar place where you knew no one? When you got there were you unnerved by the creepy atmosphere, weird food or unfriendly people? Did you wish that you’d never left the comfort of your home or family?
This happens to Stylo Green when he arrives to start his new job. But unfortunately it’s not a simple case of him adjusting and getting used to his new surroundings. Even after meeting Emulla, who brings some happiness into his life, he suspects that things are not what they seem in the mysterious company where purple liquid flows through the walls.
Vitality is a speculative fiction novella and it’s being released by Dam Good Publishing next year. The urban setting is both familiar and otherworldly while the themes of individual freedom, corporate dominance and political corruption are frighteningly relevant.
This is my first book and I’m thrilled about it being published. Previously I wrote short stories so this was a big step for me into writing longer fiction. When I started I didn’t realize how obsessed I would need to be to finally mould it into something I was happy with. However, I found the creative process extremely rewarding and I hope that people will enjoy reading it.
Recently I’ve returned to the shorter formats including some tweet-size chunks (about cakes monsters, giant ants, whispering pebbles and other random nonsense) as well as a short story set in the same world as Vitality. These are posted on my blog so if you are interested in checking out some of my fiction then this is a good place to start.
I’m also working on my second book which is about a girl who goes missing to then reappear in a comic. The protagonist journeys to another world to save her by using a machine called The Reality Converter. I’m now halfway though writing it so hopefully it should be finished next year. If you are interested in reading some sooner then let me know and I may post a chapter or two on my blog as it would be great to get some feedback.
Oh yeah, before I go there’s one more thing about Vitality I should tell you . . . It’s coming out on Valentine’s Day! Yeah, you heard right. Not exactly the most obvious date to release such a book I know, but this is to offer people an alternative to the typical, feel-good fodder that will be plentiful at this time.
So if you would rather dive headfirst into an eerily strange and emotionally painful world where the hinges of reality are loose and about to come apart at any moment, then you might want to check it out.
Thanks for reading. And thanks to Melissa for giving me the opportunity to post on her blog.
Originally from the UK, Tim now lives in Tokyo. Like many native English speakers there he teaches his mother tongue, as well as finding the time to write fiction. He gets inspiration from reading books by authors such as Philip K Dick, China Miéville and Haruki Murakami.
