New Blog Design !!!

Thanks to the wonderful Lori at Imagination Designs (and Pure Imagination), I have this amazing new blog design.  I was previously using one of her gorgeous freebie templates (found here) but wanted something a bit more custom to reflect my style. She had no problem seamlessly incorporating all of the elements that I wanted to see:  books, cats, a garden, butterflies, a dragonfly, etc.

Lori is so pleasant to work with and I highly recommend anyone who is thinking of  updating his/her blog design to go check out Imagination Designs !  Her work and the prices are both outstanding!

So what do you all think of the new design??

Book Review: The Pledge by Kimberly Derting

The Pledge
Title:  The Pledge
Author:  Kimberly Derting
Reading level: Young Adult
Genre:  Fantasy
Size: Hard Cover, 320 pages
Release Date:  November 2011
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Book
Stand Alone or Series: The Pledge #1
Source: Simon & Schuster Galley Grab

First Line:  "The air crackled like a gathering thunderstorm the moment the girl entered the chamber.”

Summary (from GoodReads):

In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in immediate execution.

Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she's spent her life trying to hide her secret. The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It's there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she's never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.

Charlie is intensely attracted to Max, even though she can't be sure where his real loyalties lie. As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country's only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime.

Favorite Quote from the Book:

“I loved voices, I always had. Words held meaning, but voices held emotion.”

My Thoughts:

The premise for this story definitely had a unique twist.  Caste distinction and social oppression defined through language.  That said I found it to be a bit unbelievable…I think that had the same world building been done, the same class lines drawn but without the whole language barrier…and had Charlie carried a different manifestation of her power it would have made a lot more sense.

I also tend to have some trouble with the whole “love at first sight” premise.  Rarely is it done well enough that the compulsion is visceral enough for me to believe it.  This time it was a bit of a stretch.

That said I did easily fall in love with her character and most of the secondary characters.  There backstories and inter personal relationships were rich and warm and I quickly came to care for all of them.  Sadly, Max felt a bit hollow…I never really “got” him.

Although it was entertaining enough to keep me reading and not feel as if I’d wasted my time, I don’t know that I’d recommend this book.  Though I suspect that it will probably go over better with a younger audience …ie. the YA audience for which it is targeted.

Was it worth my Time?

In My Mailbox (11)

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme created by The Story Siren to share whatever books and bookish goodies that you've bought, borrowed, won, or been gifted and have thus entered your home the previous week. You can show off books that you are excited about and it's also a great opportunity to showcase books that you may not actually have the time to read or review.

I had an amazingly busy week and am so thankful to be able to add all of these wonderful books to my TBR Pile:

Won:

After Obsession

Aimee and Alan have secrets. Both teens have unusual pasts and abilities they prefer to keep hidden. But when they meet each other, in a cold Maine town, they can't stop their secrets from spilling out. Strange things have been happening lately, and they both feel that something-or someone- is haunting them. They're wrong. Despite their unusual history and powers, it's neither Aimee nor Alan who is truly haunted. It's Alan's cousin Courtney who, in a desperate plea to find her missing father, has invited a demon into her life-and into her body. Only together can Aimee and Alan exorcise the ghost. And they have to move quickly, before it devours not just Courtney but everything around her.

Three Cups

Teaching children how to save, spend, and be charitable can be as simple as 1, 2, 3.
All parents want to teach their children good money habits from an early age. Many start by giving them an allowance. But it's equally important to teach children a positive, generous attitude as they learn to use money responsibly.
Filled with warm, memorable illustrations by award-winning painter, April Willy, Three Cups is the story of one family's unique and effective method of teaching personal financial management-and how one boy reaped first the small, then the immeasurably great rewards of the lessons he learned.
Families will be delighted with the heart-warming tale and want to integrate the three-cup system in their own children's lives.

Seeds of Discovery (Dusk Gate Chronicles)

Quinn Robbins' life was everything she thought a teenager's should be. She has good friends, a family that she loves, good grades, and an after-school job she enjoys. And, she's just been asked out by Zander Cunningham, a popular football player and great guy. But one day when driving home after picking up her little sister from the baby-sitter's, she nearly hits a boy who, after running blindly into the street, mysteriously disappears.
The mystery only deepens as she figures out who the boy is; William Rose, a reclusive, awkward boy from school who always has his nose in a pile of books.
As she becomes more aware of his behavior it becomes more obvious how out of the ordinary William is and how hard he deliberately tries to blend into the background. This only intrigues her more and she finds herself working to find out more about him, and exactly where he keeps disappearing to.
On a whim one night she follows him and suddenly finds herself in a new world. One where William is a prince, literally, and she is treated like a princess. She also discovers that she is stuck; the gate back to her own world isn't always open.
Quinn finds herself smack in the middle of a modern-day fairy tale, on a course that will change her life forever.

Book Review - Irish Fling by Valerie Douglas

Title:  Irish Fling
Author:  Valerie Douglas
Reading level: Adult
Genre:  Romance
Size: E-book, 446 pages
Release Date:  June 2011
Publisher: Smashwords
Stand Alone or Series: One of The Millersburg Quartet
Source: Free nook book

First Line:  "Welcome to Dublin,” the sign outside the airport said.”

Summary (from GoodReads):

At a crossroads in her life and career, orphaned Ali Dearborn had always been the smart one. With near perfect recall, she accomplished a lot in a very short time. A meteoric rise led to an equally meteoric fall. With her life and career in shambles, she goes in search of her mother's roots in Ireland. Lost, she offers handsome Aidan O'Connell a lift from his broken-down car and she gains an impromptu tour guide. But is Aidan only looking for a brief Irish Fling?

Favorite Quote from the Book:

"But she always told me to live for today, live it like there will be no tomorrow. Try to have more regrets for the things I haven't done than the things I have. Waste as little time as possible on what can't be and find something in every day that makes you happy."

My Thoughts:

I haven’t read a romance in a long time and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with this one.  It started off as a simple travel/self discovery/love at first sight story but then luckily for me morphed nicely into a bit more.  I am generally not a fan of the whole love at first sight, divided by a ridiculous conflict, and then reunited to find lasting love type story: But this story managed to make me enjoy it nonetheless.  The character development was well done and the setting in Ireland so gorgeous that I managed to find the love story believable despite itself.

Just when I feared there was no much more left to the story there was a small mystery thrown it to keep my interest though the end.

All in all, a fun quick read…a really believable love story and an entertaining way to pass a rainy day.  I doubt I’ll pick up the others in the series…but I don’t regret reading this one.

My Rating:

This book was entertaining

Wishlist Wednesday (4)/On My Wishlist (3) - Eldest by Christopher Paolini

Wishlist Wednesday is a book blog hop hosted by Pen to Paper where we will post about one book per week that has been on our wishlist for some time, or just added (it's entirely up to you), that we can't wait to get off the wishlist and onto our wonderful shelves.

On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City. It's where we list all the books we desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming.

Eldest – Christopher Paolini

Summary from GoodReads:

Darkness falls ...Despair abounds ...Evil reigns ...Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in magic and swordsmanship, the vital skills of the Dragon Rider. It is the journey of a lifetime, filled with awe-inspiring new places and people, each day a fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and Eragon isn't sure whom he can trust. Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle back home in Carvahall - one that puts Eragon in even graver danger. Will the king's dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life.

My Thoughts:

I read the first in the Inheritance series, Eragon, years ago and loved it.  Then the movie came out and broke my heart because it ruined the story.  I think it's time though for me to find out what happens to Eragon and Saphira next.

Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-thon Wrap-up

October 21-23rd

Twitter Hash Tag: #WWReadathon
Hosts: Bex @ Kindle Fever and April @ My Shelf Confession

Despite the fact that I had a very busy weekend and not much time to read (I worked all day Friday, babysat part of the day yesterday, and then had to work 1/2 a day today in addition to having a wicked sinus headache);  I did get to participate in all but one of the challenges and have some fun talking to the other participants on Twitter:)  Love meeting fellow bookworms!!

I didn't read as much as I'd hoped...3 books was an ambitious goal when I'm lucky if I finish 2 a week normally. I read just over 300 pages - I finished one book and am about 1/4 of the way thru the second. I'm off now to watch Once Upon a Time and then try to sneak in a few more pages of reading before bed!!

4.  Beauty & the Werewolf - Mercedes Lackey
5.  Beatrice Munson - Lorena Bathey
