Summary (from GoodReads):

It’s two weeks before Triss turns 18, and her world is about to change into the most magical one imaginable as she readies herself to enter The Witch Avenue Order... that is until her mother’s disappearance. Instead of celebrating her transformation, she finds herself spreading rose petals into her mother’s empty grave.

When Logan, her best friend from junior high, moves back to town for college, he vows to help her find the answers she so desperately seeks surrounding her mother’s disappearance. As they begin uncovering clues, it becomes apparent that the life of white magic they both grew up loving, is not what the majority practices, and their lives are in danger.

With a haunting feeling that her mother may still be alive, she begins to hear a call to the wilderness. Triss realizes that in order to find the answers she needs, she must learn the ways of her ancestors and become the hunter, not the hunted before it’s too late, and she becomes part of the lonely souls.

Favorite Scene:

My already fragile world started spinning. I'd been doing so well compartmentalizing everything. Now looking into his eyes, I saw a world that I wanted to be included in, but I wasn't sure I was ready or ever would be. I couldn't say anything. No words would come.

He let go of my hand and moved forward toward me.

"I'll always be here waiting for you," he said, touching my chest with his fingertips, drawing a shape of a heart.  His touch left me absolutely breathless.

Favorite Quote:

"Don't depend on someone else if you can be your own master."

My Thoughts:

This was a delightful opener to what will hopefully prove to be a great series.  We have a lot of build up here for both the mystery and the romance as well plenty of action to lead us into book two.

I loved the character of Triss.  She proved to be a typical teen in many ways, given to obliviousness in certain situations and moments of panic but she also has a good head on her shoulders and makes smart decisions.  In other words she was believable without being whiny or self centered which is key for me when picking up a YA read.

Logan was...well...completely "swoon-worthy" as they say.  He was utterly dependable, understanding and thoughtful--exactly what Triss needed in her current dilemma.  I loved his character as well...and I have to admit that I've always been a fan of the romance developing between longtime childhood friends angle.

Karice's writing is pretty smooth and she weaves a fascinating tale with a great mix of mystery, coming of age, romance and paranormal.  I'll definitely have by eye out for the second in The Witch Avenue Series.

Was it worth my Time?
