Guest Post & Giveaway: How to have a day job and still give a hoot about writing

How to have a day job and still give a hoot about writing
By Denise Robbins

So you have a day job and you really want to get that book written. After a full eight or more hour day at work, how do you come home and still manage to get those creative juices flowing and write?

Any novice writer and many established writers deal with this dilemma every day. I do! I work anywhere from eight to eleven hours, depending on the day and the fires I have to put out at work. But I still manage to finish at least one book every nine to twelve months.

How?

There are a couple of ways that work for me. On mornings that I am not training for my half-marathon, I get up in the morning and write. Or at the breakfast table, I carry a pen and paper around and write paragraphs or scenes when I can.

In the evenings, if I have an appointment outside the house like getting my hair cut, I again carry pen and notebook with me to work on my novel in progress.

You scoff at my use of pen and paper, but remember, this is how we all started. Plus, it’s not always conducive to carry a laptop around and open it up at will. Every story that I start I go out and buy myself a new notebook that is dedicated just for that novel. It’s kind of a celebratory treat to help kick off an new adventure.

Beyond squeezing in writing wherever possible, I plan a certain day and time that is dedicated to my writing. It’s only fair. If you dedicate eight hours a day to your job, shouldn’t you dedicate some amount of time for your writing passion?

I personally find I am at my best writing on Sunday mornings. Every Sunday, I pack my bag with laptop, a FLASH drive, my notebook and of course my wallet. Then I get in my car, drive twenty minutes north from where I live and go to Panera. I like Panera because they have free Wi-Fi and because there is no waitress who is going to stop by my table and ask me several times if I need anything else. I order a sod and cinnamon roll and then I curl into a booth at the back of the restaurant, pull out my little netbook, and write. And write!

I do not edit on Sunday mornings. I do not review what I had previously written. I write the next scene or the next chapter and I don’t get up and leave until I do. There have been days that I can whip out three full chapters sitting there and then there are other days where I can get one good one. It doesn’t matter how much, just that I make progress.

Another way that helps me keep myself motivated on my goal to write my novel is to set a self-imposed date. For example, last year I flew to Ireland for a vacation. On the flight back I was so inspired by everything I had seen and done that I could not stop writing. Since I don’t want to take forever to get a book out, and I have readers who complain (in a nice and loving way) that they just finished one book, when will the next one be out, I have to get a novel done close to the time the previous one was released. I started writing my Ireland novel last March and I finished it this March. I gave myself no more than one year.

Giving yourself a date to be completed by, give you that extra oomph to keep on writing.

My motivation may not work for you, but adapt it. Think about what will incent you to come home after a long day and write for thirty minutes or an hour. Maybe you have to set your alarm clock one hour earlier.

Do it! Go for it! The rewards are amazing on the other end.

Happy writing!

The Book:

All she wanted was to find love. Was that too much to ask? How difficult could it be to find one man, the perfect man for her?
After dating the losers of the century, Jane decides there has to be a better way. She turns to an online dating service. After all, they guarantee a ‘happily ever after’ or your money back.

Jane East, CEO of Not-So- Plain- Jane’s organic cosmetics wants to fall in love with a man who makes her toes curl when he kisses her. Unfortunately, the one man who makes her toes curl also wears ladies’ pink underwear and a badge. The pink underwear she could probably deal with, but the badge is a different story.

Ever since seeing her mother and granny Pearl murdered by men with badges, Jane has a fear of cops and anyone who carries a badge. Especially, because the killers are still on the loose and searching for her.

Former FBI Cybercrime special agent turned small-town Chief of Police, Cooper Chance, gets caught with his pants down and his family jewels tucked in pink ladies’ underwear with lacy frills when he meets the woman of his dreams. That’s not his only issue. The woman has a fear of cops. If he can get past her guard, maybe he can save her life.

Cover Reveal & Giveaway: My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris

Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore.

Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever?

And the gorgeous cover!!!

Trailer:

Never-Before-Seen Excerpt from MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY:

“I thought I’d teach you a dance from where I come from,” I tell him. “One that’s much easier than that multi-step mess inside.”
  I place my left hand on Lorenzo’s shoulder and slip my right one into his. I pause to listen to the music floating over the tinkling voices and bubbling fountain, and begin counting the three-beat tempo. “One, two, three. One, two, three.”
  I stand still, only my head moving, slowly nodding with my words so he can hear the rhythm.
  When his head begins subtly bobbing with mine, I show him how to add his feet. He takes a tentative step forward with his left while I step back with my right, then we side step, close, and repeat the steps with our other feet, all while I lightly whisper the beat count.
  The breeze picks up, blowing my skirt and skimming my veil across the back of my neck. Chills run down my spine, but the warmth coursing through my veins from being in his arms provides a delicious contradiction.
  Lorenzo continues nervously darting his eyes to our feet, but he is dancing. As he relaxes into the movement, his shoulders rising and falling with the steps, the confidence he always seems to exude creeps back on his face, and he tightens the hold around me. Our faces are kissably close, our lips a hairs breadth away from touching. I stare into the chocolate depths of his eyes and the rest of the ball fades away. The only music guiding our steps is my light whisper and the erratic rhythm of our breathing. Time slows. Lorenzo grins.
  “I think you got it,” I say breathlessly, running my hand along the soft fabric of his shoulder, feeling the rock-hard muscles underneath.
  My body curls inward, pressing against his. The proper form for the waltz is a straight spine and shoulders back, but if there was ever a time to break the rules, this is it.

As a teen, I threw raging parties that shook my parents’ walls and created embarrassing fodder for future YA novels.

As an adult, I read and write obsessively, rehash said embarrassing fodder, and dream up characters who become my imaginary friends.

When I'm not typing furiously or flipping pages in an enthralling romance, you can find me homeschooling my two beautiful princesses, hanging out with my amazing husband, or taking a hot bubble bath…next to a pile of chocolate.

MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY is my first novel. I did have my own fantabulous Sweet Sixteen in high school. Sadly, it wasn’t televised.

It’s 1941. Babe throws like a boy, thinks for herself, and never expects to escape the poor section of her quiet Massachusetts town. Then World War II breaks out, and everything changes. Her friend Grace, married to a reporter on the local paper, fears being left alone with her infant daughter when her husband ships out; Millie, the third member of their childhood trio, now weds the boy who always refused to settle down; and Babe wonders if she should marry Claude, who even as a child could never harm a living thing. As the war rages abroad, life on the home front undergoes its own battles and victories; and when the men return, and civilian life resumes, nothing can go back to quite the way it was.
From postwar traumas to women’s rights, racial injustice to anti-Semitism, Babe, Grace, and Millie experience the dislocations, the acute pains, and the exhilaration of a society in flux. Along the way, they will learn what it means to be a wife, a mother, a friend, a fighter, and a survivor. Beautiful, startling, and heartbreaking, Next to Love is a love letter to the brave women who shaped a nation’s destiny.

Just a Cowboy by Rachel Lee

On the run from her powerful and lethal almost ex-husband, Kelly Scanlon finds a temporary haven in a small Wyoming town and dares to trust the questioning—gorgeous—cowboy next door. Opening up to Hank Jackson about her past is as frightening as what sent her running in the first place. Except, he's the only one who believes she's in danger—and makes her feel safe. But the gray-eyed man with the guarded heart and tragic past of his own keeps insisting he's nobody's hero. Until Kelly's worst nightmare tracks her down…and her cowboy proves just what he's made of.

Lord Curan Ramsden is home from war, and eager to claim his betrothed. And he arrives just in time--his bride's father has summoned her to London, to wed another man. But Bridget's father promised her to Curan, and Curan means to have her. Especially now that he sees the luscious young woman she has blossomed into. He'll just have to convince Bridget, somehow, that her heart is more important than her duty. . .

Bridget Newbury has always done her duty--to her parents, to the church, to the man they selected as her betrothed. She knows what could happen if she disobeys her father. The king has put nobler women to death for lesser trespasses. But she was promised to Curan first, and his kisses are very tempting. . .

A Visit from Hillary Peak

The truth is that I am a crazy person.  Why? you ask.  Because I try to handle three full-time jobs!  I earn an actual living by being an attorney.  During any second where I can, I write and promote my novels, trying desperately to move from having a dream of being a writer to having that be an income earning activity, and lastly, I am a mommy!  No, no, you say, you are an author.  That's true, but that is different than being a writer.  As an author, I've produced works of fiction.  If I were a writer, that would mean that I got paid a livable wage to do what I love.   Here's how I know there is a difference:  if you ask me what I do for a living, I'll tell you I'm a lawyer.  I'm not at the point of getting to say I'm a writer.  But I am always hopeful!

The thing that fills me with renewed hope is each new review of my novels.  When people like my writing, I know I can keep going.

I balance all of these things by just doing what I can do.  My house isn't really the neatest or the cleanest because I choose to play with my child rather than clean.  I do as much writing and promoting as I can around my other tasks.  I often watch TV with the computer on my lap sending out new emails, writing blog posts, doing follow-up emails.  I try to set aside one hour a day to write, even if I'm eating lunch while I do it!

So, who am I?  I am an aspiring writer who knows one day, my daughter will be telling her friends that her mommy is on the New York Times Bestseller list.

~~~Hillary Peak
Wings of Hope takes you on a road trip through the memories of a man making peace with his life through his conversations with his daughter. Teaching her that death is sometimes the most heartbreakingly beautiful part of life.
Hope is the last gift of a father to his daughter--the power to reach for her dreams.
Teaser Tuesdays - The Tiger's Wife by Tea Obreht
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Summary From Goodreads:

Natalia Stefanovi, a doctor living (and, in between suspensions, practicing) in an unnamed country that's a ringer for Obreht's native Croatia, crosses the border in search of answers about the death of her beloved grandfather, who raised her on tales from the village he grew up in, and where, following German bombardment in 1941, a tiger escaped from the zoo in a nearby city and befriended a mysterious deaf-mute woman. The evolving story of the tiger's wife, as the deaf-mute becomes known, forms one of three strands that sustain the novel, the other two being Natalia's efforts to care for orphans and a wayward family who, to lift a curse, are searching for the bones of a long-dead relative; and several of her grandfather's stories about Gavran Gailé, the deathless man, whose appearances coincide with catastrophe and who may hold the key to all the stories that ensnare Natalia.

My Teaser:

"I saw him thinking about it. He thought for a long time while we walked with the elephant.  Perhaps under slightly different circumstances, he might have told me the story about the tiger's wife. Instead, he told me about the deathless man."

Harvest Dreams
Book III in the Magic Seasons series
By Jacqueline Paige

Step into a world of magic and passions....

Take a dash of spice, heat it
Add a flash of magic and watch the sparks fly
Toss in a killer that's targeting women
Add a handful of witches from all paths to stir it all together...

Rachel is a woman that lives carefree with a buoyant recklessness. She loves being a flirt and has spent many years indulging that side of her personality. Her energy draws others; her character is to protect all those that cannot protect themselves.  When she’s not riding on life, she is helping children less fortunate then herself.

Steven is man that gives more than his energy usually allows.  He is a highly respected pediatrician that always goes that extra step to ensure all in his care are receiving his utmost attention.  He often sacrifices sleep to spend time with his friends, and he can’t seem to help affably chasing the skirt of the one woman that breaks his easy going charm and makes him forget he’s supposed to be the jovial.  He hides his strength in body and magic, never letting others know that he is more than the carefree man with everything he needs.

Armed with magic and a plan for the Lammas festival as a group they are determined to stop the killer from harming anyone again.  With a plan of his own, Steven decides he’s done waiting for Rachel to see that they’re meant to be together and takes things into his own hands.

Excerpt:

When they were well out of sight Steven stopped and looked back towards the cabin.

Chris hissed out a breath as he looked around. “This should be far enough.” He looked at the trees overhead and then to the ground.  “How do you want to do this?”  He sent him a wary look.  “Who are you going after?”

Steven rubbed his jaw.  “Not Kasey, she’d just zap my ass and I’d probably have burn marks.”  He noted the pride in Chris’s eyes as he tried not to smirk.  “I’m going to aim for Rachel or Leena, definitely not Cora.  If she so much as made a sound, Dade would thump me into the ground.”

Chris grinned.  “And you don’t think Owen would?”

Steven shook his head.  “Leena wouldn’t let him.”  He let out a deep breath and then held up his hands, palms facing Chris.  “Here goes nothing.”  He closed his eyes and took slow breaths as he reached deep inside to the magic he held tightly within his body.  He felt it climb through him and warm his skin.  When Chris’s finger tips touched his, he felt a powerful boost to the magic gathering.

He pictured Rachel inside his mind and focused on her for a few seconds, testing.  A heat spread through him as he felt the connection to her aura pass over his own.  He searched for the way into her thoughts and felt her mind click open as if he’d turned a lock.  Taking a deep breath he concentrated harder.
His hands shook until he felt Chris funnel some of his own power into the sight he was trying to grasp.  He could see all of the women and a multitude of colors as they moved around inside the cabin.  He could feel nervousness and anxiety.  Furrowing his brow his held onto the link as it started to change.  He couldn’t sense what it was now, it had somehow changed quickly.  It was as if …
A blast of power shot through him and sent him sprawling to the ground.  His hands were burning suddenly and it felt like he’d been hit across the head with something made of stone.  He opened his eyes slowly and looked up at the leaves on the trees above him.  Lifting his head carefully he looked around and spotted Chris lying flat on his back as well.
“We are in a lot of trouble, Doctor.”  Chris sounded out of breath.
“Yeah,” he agreed and then turned his head towards the steps coming from the direction of the cabin.
