Excerpt & Giveaway - Sound Bites: A Rock & Roll Love Story

Renee Evans has a knack for trouble. After walking in on her best friend and boyfriend in bed together, twenty-five year-old Renee flees sunny Los Angeles and her dream job as a music journalist and returns to her hometown of Boston – only to meet Dylan Cavallari, the mysterious, aspiring musician who lives in her apartment building. Dylan’s piercing gaze and womanizing demeanor make him exactly the type of guy that Renee should steer clear of – which is most likely the reason she falls for him. But when Renee’s troublesome ex comes back and threatens to drive her and Dylan apart, Renee is forced to face her past and save her relationship with Dylan before it’s too late.

Sound Bites dramatizes what happens when Renee finds herself caught between a painful past and an uncertain future. Happiness turns out to be within her grasp, but it all depends on whether she can trust herself enough to make the right decisions. Sound Bites is a novel about love, friendship, betrayal, forgiveness, and the power of music to help you find your way.

EXCERPT:

When I arrived back in L.A. the following week, I had a new and improved attitude. I told myself that I would stop over-analyzing every aspect of my relationship and start living one day at a time. Maybe my forever feelings about David would change in time. Maybe they wouldn’t. But I loved David, right now, at this moment in my life. And with my new outlook in mind, I went right from the airport to his house to surprise him.
I surprised him all right.
I strolled in his front door, through the living room, down the hallway, and threw open his bedroom door, not expecting what was waiting for me on the other side.
I stood there in a momentary lapse of paralysis, taking everything in, as David’s eyes stared back at me in horror, followed by another pair of eyes. Eyes I knew all too well. Eyes that belonged to someone I loved and trusted more than life itself. Eyes I knew that, no matter how many times I stared back at them, would never look the same again.
Somehow, after gathering the scattered pieces of my brain and piecing them back together, I managed to unbuckle my feet from the floor and back away from the deluded scene that was unfolding before my eyes. My legs guided me in the reverse direction as the outline of their figures became smaller and smaller.
And then I did the only thing that I could manage to do in my state of shock. I ran.
And I never once looked back.

How I chose my characters – or how they chose me by Cate Dean

I am happy to welcome Cate Dean to Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf.  Rest for the Wicked sounds like a great read and perfect for the Witches & Witchcraft Reading Challenge!
How I chose my characters – or how they chose me
 by Cate Dean

The characters in my stories have always come as part of the whole, walking and talking in my head before they ever land on the page. But there are always surprises, and unexpected appearances.
In Rest For The Wicked, Claire was already well created in my mind. But Annie – now she was a surprise. All of a sudden, what was supposed to be a sidekick for Claire turned into a strong, smart-mouthed, standout character who ended up with much more page time than I originally planned. And the response to her has also been a delightful surprise. I have big plans ahead for her.
Marcus was an unexpected appearance. I never even planned for another male character to show up, never mind step up and take center stage. Marcus evolved in one startling scene that simply wrote itself, and there was no way I could get rid of him after that. In one fell swoop, he had become indispensible, and added a dimension that completely changed the tone of the story.
Mildred is an absolute delight – a walk on who became a constant thorn for Claire. More so than I planned in the beginning. She will be back, with more mischief up her sleeve.
These are just examples of the mystery and wonder that happens during the writing process. Even with a carefully planned outline, a firm idea and a story plotted out, there are surprises, twists, and a character or three that will completely turn the story on its head.
I love watching them emerge, and just let the magic happen when they do show up. Worst case, they end up in the outtakes, to be used in another story. Or if they try to take over, they are set aside for a story of their own.
This is the thrill and the joy of writing. To meet these characters, write about them, and give them a chance to be heard is the reason I sit down and write every day. There is nothing more exhausting, more exhilarating, or more fulfilling.

Rest for the Wicked
By Cate Dean
Book One The Claire Wiche Chronicles

Claire Wiche is an ordinary woman, running her Wicca shop, The Wiche’s Broom, in an ordinary California beach town.

But Claire wasn’t always ordinary, and she isn’t quite human. She hides a secret, and a past she thought she had put behind her.

A past that is about to explode into her present.

When it does, and everyone she loves is in danger, Claire must face up to her past – and become what she left behind in order to save them.

Excerpt:

Claire Wiche guided her unhappy customer through her shop, one arm around the woman’s hunched shoulders.
“You know I don’t do love spells, Mildred.”
“But I know if he could see me, really see me, he’d fall desperately in—”
“Would it be real, if he’s under an enchantment?”
Mildred pouted, not a pretty sight on an eighty-year-old woman. “What happened to the customer is always right?”
Biting her lip on a smile, Claire walked her through the open door.
“Never been my policy. And I have good reasons for that.” She rubbed the old woman’s arm. “You go on home now. I’ll phone you when my new shipment of crystals shows up.”
Leaning against the narrow porch post, Claire watched her toddle down the sidewalk, sunlight bouncing off the thin silver poodle curls. The morning gloom had burned off early, and it looked like the start of another beautiful day.
She crossed her arms, cold despite the sweater she slipped on earlier. It took longer to warm up lately, a fact she did her best to ignore.
“Are you cold again, Claire? It’s got to be at least 80 in the store.”
Unless, of course, a well-meaning friend shoved it in her face.
She turned around, forced a smile. “Is it, Annie? I must have forgotten to turn it down this morning.”
“How could you not notice? The candles are sweating.” Annie Sullivan—the lively, no-holds-barred friend Claire never expected to have in her life—stepped across the small porch that ran along the front of the shop, her almost six foot height topping Claire by a good ten inches. She caught one hand before Claire could shove them in her pockets. “You’re like ice. Again.” She looked down at Claire, concern in her warm brown eyes. “And you’re avoiding. Again.”
With a sigh, Claire squeezed her hand before easing out of it. The warmth in Annie’s fingers made her skin tingle, yearn.
“Time to turn that heat down before the candles become a puddle.”
Annie followed her back inside, hovering while she adjusted the thermostat to a more reasonable temperature. She would need a heavier sweater.
“Come on,” Annie said, hands on her hips. “Give.”
Shaking her head, Claire smiled, a real smile this time. “Would I’m just cold and tired do it for you?”
“Hardly.” Annie stood in front of the counter, looking like a golden Amazon ready for battle. “But it’ll have to until I can get you drunk and pry the truth out of you.”
Laughter burst out of Claire. “I’d like to see that.”
“Yeah, so would I. If you actually touched the stuff.” She gave Claire a wicked smile. “I could always slip you a mickey.”
“You could—if I wasn’t able to smell it from across the room.”
“Slapped down again. Hey—what if we just tried—”
“Not again. Never again.” Claire still felt the residual agony from her one failed attempt at social drinking.
“How do you do that?” Those warm brown eyes narrowed as they studied her. “How do you always know what I’m going to say?”
Claire reached up and patted her cheek. “I’m a witch, sweetheart. It’s what I do.”
“Wait.” She grabbed Claire’s hand, pushed her sleeve up to reveal the bandage that peeked out. “Is that another tattoo? What is it this time?”
Claire flushed. The second reason she put on a sweater this morning.
“A triquetra.”
“More protection? Jeez, Claire, the pentacle on your hip isn’t enough?”
“There is no such thing as too much protection.” She pulled free and walked around the counter. “And the subject is closed.”
“Okay, I can take a hint. I’ll drop in sometime tomorrow, see if you need any help during the festival madness.”
“That will be most appreciated.”
Annie strode to the door, her long legs taking her through the small shop in a few paces. She paused in the doorway. “Hey, Claire—I’m worried, and I poke when I’m worried. I’ll leave it alone for now. But if you don’t get better, I’ll do more than poke.”
“Annie.” She stuck her head back in. “Don’t you even think about taking on Mildred’s love spell.”
Color rushed into her cheeks.
“I wasn’t—”
“I mean it. Last time you nearly had your victim falling in love with her cat.”
“Never gonna let me live that one down, are you?”
Claire smiled. “Not if it keeps you from trying again.”
Annie cursed under her breath and stalked out.
Chuckling, Claire made a mental note to put feelers out. Annie had more than enough power, and just enough knowledge to make her dangerous.
Without warning the pain stabbed her; a blade of ice in her gut.
Bracing her hands on the counter, she fought to breathe, fought to keep herself upright. Shaking so hard her rings clattered against the granite countertop, she gained enough control to lower herself to the chair that she recently added, out of necessity.
“God above—” She pressed both arms against her stomach, prayed for a slow morning. If she believed God would actually listen to her, after all this time, she’d ask the single question that haunted her.
Is this how it feels to be dying?

First Line: "First came the crows."

Summary (from GoodReads):

Lately strange things have been happening to Daire Santos. Animals follow her, crows mock her, and glowing people appear out of nowhere. Worried that Daire is having a nervous breakdown, her mother packs her off to stay in the dusty plains of Enchantment, New Mexico with a grandmother she’s never met.

There she crosses paths with Dace, a gorgeous guy with unearthly blue eyes who she’s encountered before...but only in her dreams. And she’ll get to know her grandmother—a woman who recognizes Daire’s bizarre episodes for what they are. A call to her true destiny as a Soul Seeker, one who can navigate between the worlds of the living and the dead. Her grandmother immediately begins teaching her to harness her powers—but it’s an art that must be mastered quickly. Because Dace’s brother is an evil shape-shifter who’s out to steal her powers. Now Daire must embrace her fate as a Soul Seeker and find out if Dace is one guy she’s meant to be with...or if he’s allied with the enemy she’s destined to destroy.

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this first book in a new series by Alyson Noel.  I was unfamiliar with her other work but had heard good things and Fated lived up to them.

The story built slowly, gradually letting us in on Daire and her gift/curse as she's sent by her mother (as a last resort) to live with a grandmother (Paloma) that she doesn't know...but who seems to know her and what is going on with her all too well. Noel takes a bit of a meandering path as Paloma tries to teach Daire what she needs to know to survive this family legacy and then the end rushes upon us and suddenly the tale is over.

At times I felt very frustrated that Daire and Paloma did not seem to take this whole situation as seriously as I would have.  Daire seemed to have a devil may care attitude from the beginning which did get a bit grating and Paloma put her grandaughter in so many dangerous situations with little or no preparation that I had a hard time finding it completely believable.  Despite all this, or perhaps because of it, both of their characters did seem to have quite a bit of growth through the novel...especially in their interpersonal relationship.  I credit Noel's writing style and prowess also for keeping me engaged with the story and Daire's journey despite the slow pace.

Daire is not only on a mystical journey but also one of self discovery and growth as are all teens, she is trying to navigate her way through going from being a world traveler living out of a suitcase and being schooled online and to finding herself in a small town living with a woman she doesn't know and attending high school with all it's drama, cliques, etc. The secondary characters like Cade, Clayton, Xotichl and Lita  are wonderflully fleshed out and add so much to the story.

The romance aspect of the story was a tad disappointing.... Dace was a very underdeveloped character in my opinion and the whole soul-mates/insta-love thing rarely wows me unless done incredibly well...and sadly that was not the case here.  However, look to the romance between Xotichl's and Auden and you'll have your swoon-worthy moments.

The biggest draw for me was the setting and mythology.  I found both to be fresh and to add so much to the story. I loved the way Noel wove so much Native American tradition and lore into the book.  It gave it a richness and a depth that it would otherwise have been lacking and kept me hooked and reading until the end.

All in all it was an enjoyable read and I'm hoping that now that the backstory is laid out and the characters drawn that the series will only improve. I'll look forward to the next in the Soul Seekers series!

Was it worth my Time?

Character Interview: Lacey from Becoming a Butterfly by Mia Castile

I am so happy to have Lacey from Mia Castile's Becoming a Butterfly here today for an interview!

Hi Lacey:)  Welcome to Melissa’s Eclectic Bookshelf!

Hi Melissa, It’s so nice to be here, thank you for having me. This is my first interview, like, ever, I’m a little nervous. The good thing is I don’t have to actually walk anywhere, because that might be a little embarrassing.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like growing up with two best friends who grew into much more popular figures in school than you were? And how did that affect your relationships?

Our friendship is definitely unique. I think it’s important to accept your friends for who they are and not try to change them. That’s what we do with each other and it seems to work. Jade and Tasha both have tried to help me find myself and have been a great support every time I fall on my face. I’ve never been jealous of their social status, but I will admit, I have been envious of how easily it comes to them. It’s a good thing it’s never gone to their heads though, they are pretty well grounded.

2. What was it about Henry that was so captivating?

Henry is like the unachievable boy that I watched since elementary school. I think I missed our friendship and never understood why we stopped being friends. He had everything that I wanted, very cute, funny, and nice. It’s safe to like him though, because he’s so unachievable, I guess it’s a lesser form of rejection knowing he’s out of my league.

3. And, how could you have a window that close to Henry’s (or any boys) without needing a curtain??!!

Haha! I had blinds, but I never lowered or closed them because I felt like I still had a connection to him if the windows were open. And for the record, he didn’t close his blinds either, but the point is I got glimpses of him that way, I felt close to him. I definitely realized my freedom after I lowered the blinds though.

4. What did it feel like to see the attention that “Farrah” was receiving, knowing that she was in essence you?

Nerve-wracking mostly, but liberating too. She gave me a voice, when before I didn’t even know the words. Farrah did things and said things that I thought I could never get away with. I guess, maybe she made it easier to be me.

5. What were you feeling when you first met Chase? And now?

Chase really intimidated me at first. He was this cool collected quiet guy. Then he scared me knowing about Farrah. He’s really smart and figured it out so fast. What I learned about Chase is that he’s the most genuine person I know. He knows who he is, and what he stands for. He’s become my best friend and understands me in a way no one else can. It’s amazing when someone like that comes into your life, you should hold on to them tight.

6. How has your relationships with Jade and Tasha evolved?

There comes a time when you have to decide if the friendship is worth fighting for.  With the whole Farrah situation, we definitely reached that crossroad. I’m grateful, that they stood by me, as I muddled through discovering myself. I think we all grew up a little. That’s the test of true friendship.

7. What advice do you have for other teenage girls who may be/feel unpopular?

I’m told that most people don’t peak in high school, and it will only get better from here. So my advice would be to figure out who you are, and be that person. Don’t worry about popularity, as long as you have a few close friends to trust, then down the road they’ll still be there when popularity fades. That goes both ways, be the kind of friend that you would want to have. No one can dictate how you perceive yourself.

8. Is there one thing that you can tell us that no one else knows about you?

Wow! Going for the kill?! Lol. If I tell you then all your followers will know my secret. Can you have them sign a waiver before they read this post? Most everyone knows I’m a gamer, but a few years ago, I went on this rampage of collecting old consoles and games. I guess that’s probably not unique, but what I learned was my favorite old school games and character is from my sega genesis and it’s *hangs head in shame* Sonic the hedgehog. So much so that sometimes I watch old cartoon episodes on the internet. Not my proudest moments.

The Book:

16 year old Lacey was never the center of attention, unless she was tripping, stammering, or being deposited into a pool by the local popular kids. All she wanted was to fit in, until one night when everything changed.
Jade and Tasha, her two best friends, helped her create an online personality that was everything she wanted to be - and it was only the beginning. In doing so she attracted the attention of Henry, her lifelong crush and next door neighbor. Unfortunately it was Farrah, her online personality and not herself, he was interested in.
She also attracted Chase the brooding, quiet, anti-social new kid of Brownsburg High School, who easily figured out her secret and blackmailed her. They forged a friendship that was both unique and complicated.
Lacey must decide if revealing herself to Henry and her entire school as the cool, charming, and funny Farrah is worth possibly losing him forever, and she finds herself needing to make an even harder decision than she ever thought possible. When did the lines between truth and lies get so blurred?

Becoming a Butterfly is a story about coming of age and finding yourself when you never knew you were lost.

The Author:

This is a story about a girl, named Mia. She grew up in suburb of medium sized city. There were cold winters, and hot sticky summers. Mia’s favorite seasons were spring and fall. She enjoyed the mild seasons, but also loved the vibrant colors each possessed.
Mia loved music. She didn’t just love it, she sat on the floor in front of her Casio stereo for hours at a time, recording songs off the radio. Then she would cue them up and make sure she only got the music as she recorded them on a second tape, without the DJ’s voices on them, just the music. Then she would listen to those songs absorbing the words as she sat in her room and wrote her poetry.

She wrote her first Poem when she was thirteen. It was called Sands of Time. When she was sixteen and again when she was eighteen she won two state competitions for her poetry. Her Poetry was stories of roses, starry nights, love, loss, and the scars left behind. She found recourse in those private moments filling notebooks of her writings. As she grew so did her inspirations, and when ever it hit her the rest of the world melted away until her verses were written, alive in the world.

Even today as Mia writes mostly YA fiction, poetry still holds a special place in her heart. Her love for all things words propels her forward in her pursuit of the next great story. Her Debut Novel The Ocean will be released this spring.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Turning “I Hope” and “I Want” into “I Will” by Meira Pentermann

Turning “I Hope” and “I Want” into “I Will”
by Meira Pentermann

The achievement of any dream begins with the assertion, “I will do this!” Dreams that remain sheltered under words like “I want” or “I hope” will never see the light of day.

The act of choosing these powerful words is not that difficult. After battling little internal voices that say, “You shouldn’t brag,” and “Don’t get your hopes up,” you will eventually find the resolve to declare, “I will! And nothing will stop me!” Your day might then progress in a manic frenzy of activity. You’ll have a spring in your step, believing you can do anything. You’ll spin in circles, giddy with the desire to share your ideas – your soul – with the world.

Nevertheless, a day, an hour, or a week later you will inevitably be visited by a little doubt demon. He will show up and whisper in a cruel, harsh voice, “Who do you think you’re kidding, sweetheart?” This is one of the turning points. What do you do with the doubt demon? Do you feed him, appease him, or swat him away like a pesky fly? Even if you are successful at ridding yourself of the pest, his brother will sneak up on you. Fear. Far more toxic and definitely stealthier, fear can hide behind doubt and release a cloud of poison before you even know it is there. After a while, the words “I will” seem daunting and downright foolish.

This happens to everyone who declares a dream. A unique pain accompanies the act of launching a portion of your soul into the universe. It is like anxiety mixed with remorse and a hint of shame. Anxiety because you are trusting strangers with an intimate and fragile part of your being. Remorse because you know you could have easily spared yourself the agony. Shame because you might not be good enough. As the world bombards you with rejection and doubt you wonder: What was I thinking? If only I held back. If only I lingered in “I hope”. . . then I would be safe.

I say this not to discourage those of you who are battling the fear of putting a portion of your soul into the universe. I wish, instead, to persuade you to walk into that fear. Dispel that doubt. Practice belief. If you are anticipating the perfect moment, forget it. There is no perfect moment. If you are holding back until someone pushes you, no dice. People are too busy trying to push themselves. And if you are waiting until it feels safe, you will surrender your life to insignificance. It will never feel safe. Ever. But it is worth every moment of fear, agony and embarrassment when you watch your dreams become reality.

First step? “I will!”

The Trailer:

The Author:

On slow, snowy days in her Colorado home, Meira Pentermann enjoys cozying up on the couch with a novel. Naturally, snow is not a requirement; neither is the couch. In fact, she sees no reason not to indulge in reading three-hundred-and-sixty-five days a year. Apocalyptic science fiction, mysteries, and young adult titles top her Kindle list, but legal thrillers and chik-lit make an appearance now and then.

When not absorbed in writing or reading, Meira enjoys life’s little moments with her family – the love and devotion of her black lab, the quiet wisdom of her artistic twenty-one-year-old, the trials and triumphs of her petite sixth grader, and the unlimited encouragement offered by her Dutch husband.
Meira strives to write stories that deliver the unexpected. She prefers down-to-earth characters that look and behave like regular folks. The prom queen and Adonis take a backseat to reclusive, soul-searching heroines and quirky, introverted gentlemen.

Excerpt:

I sat with my legs outstretched, leaning back on my palms and Chansey mimicked my position. She reached for her dress and scooted it up her thighs until she was satisfied with the amount of sun exposure on her legs. She enjoyed being in the sun and I wondered if she had given any thought as to how she would miss it if she became a vampire.
I didn’t want to think about it, so I shoved the thought aside and asked, “Are Gia and Lairah being overbearing about the wedding plans?”
“They have some intense ideas about our wedding,” she laughed. “I think I might want to elope.”
Now, she was talking my language. “You don’t have to convince me. I’ll take you to Vegas and make you my wife right now if it’s what you want.”
She quickly said, “Nope. I’m not ready to give up my dream of marrying you at the top of the open arm staircases.”
I wondered how I could be so lucky. How had I found enough favor with the gods to be given such a beautiful gift as Chansey?
“Oh, I’m sorry,” she apologized. “I didn’t even ask you if that was what you wanted.”
“I’ve already told you that I thought it was perfect,” I reminded her.
She appeared puzzled. “I don’t recall you telling me that.”
“We didn’t exactly discuss it. When we were at Rachel and Christian’s wedding reception, you told me how you pictured your wedding. We didn’t get far into the conversation because that jackass, Evan Finley, interrupted us.”
“Yes, that I remember well. I’m sorry his stupid insults stand out more in my mind than our conversation,” she apologized.
Just thinking about that jackass had my blood boiling, so I thought it was a great idea to steer the direction of the conversation back toward the wedding. “Have you thought about a date for our wedding?”
She smiled and her eyes lit up. “Yes, I’ve given it a lot of thought and I have a date in mind. How do you feel about a November wedding?”
No way! That was too long to wait. “I’d be fine with it if this was the end of October. I know four months isn’t forever, but it sure feels an eternity to me right now.”
“It’s not an eternity and four months barely gives me enough time to plan a small wedding. We haven't even told Granna and Granddaddy about our engagement yet. Have you forgotten that?”
I definitely had not forgotten that detail. “No, it hasn’t slipped my mind.”
She laughed and asked, “Are you worried about telling them?”
“I am a little nervous about it. I’ve never asked to marry someone before,” I admitted.
She leaned over and bumped her shoulder against mine. “Well, that’s good to know, but we’re telling them we’re getting married, not asking permission.”
“I know we don’t have to have their permission. That’s not what I need. It’s their blessing I want. I may be three times as old as Grady, but I still want to be respectful,” I said.
She looked at me and rested her chin against her shoulder as she laughed. “That is so bizarre to me.”
It didn’t sound like a compliment. “Does my age bother you?”
“No, I don’t think of you as your actual age. You just seem like a 26 year-old to me.” She sat up and leaned closer to brush her lips across mine. “A very robust 26 year-old.”
Her kiss and proximity stirred her Agape scent, leaving me with an intense urgency to be closer to her. I reached for her, pulling her against my chest a little too quickly. I heard her gasp and then I saw the smile across her face, proving the sudden catch in her breath resulted from delight instead of fear.
She deepened our kiss as she rolled to her back, pulling me on top of her to rest between her bent knees. This was our first private moment since we arrived at the compound and it caused me to be overly enthusiastic. I knew I shouldn’t, but I placed my hand behind one of her knees and pulled her leg to wrap around my waist as I pressed my body into hers. A sigh escaped her lips and she pulled her other leg up around my waist. The thoughts of what I wanted to do to her returned me to my senses and she recognized the look she had become so well acquainted with when things between us had gone a little too far.
She groaned because she knew what was coming next and locked her legs around my waist. “Don’t you dare stop because you can not keep doing this to me. It’s totally unfair!”
I reached for her legs to coax them off of me. “Move the wedding up and I’ll be more than glad to become totally fair. In fact, I’m quite anxious to be totally fair.”
A thoughtful look came across her face and she said, “October. It’s the earliest I can pull it off even with help from Gia and Lairah.”
I tugged on her bottom lip with my teeth. “That’s still three months away,” I complained.
A pouty look came over her face and the little vixen I loved tried to use her power of persuasion on me just like Sebastian said she would. “I know a way to make the next three months pass much faster.”
“You’re name shouldn’t be Chansey. It should be Risky because you are playing with a fire you highly underestimate,” I assured her.
She dramatically huffed. “Promises, promises. I’m not sure I’ll ever find out if I underestimate you or not.”
Since I easily talked her into moving the date a month earlier, I thought I might push my luck a little further. “Looks like you won’t discover the truth for months, unless you want to move the date closer.” I took my hand and placed it on her thigh, moving it slowly under her dress as I said, “Come on, let’s do it.” I allowed my words linger as I gazed into her eyes and then I added, “In August.”
When I began to laugh, she forcibly slapped my hand away from under her dress to show her unhappiness with my joke. “I can wait if you can. Maybe even until the end of December. I’ve heard Christmas weddings are beautiful.”
It was clear I had pushed my luck too far with her when she showed me how she could beat me at my own game, so I conceded. “I’ll take the October wedding.”

Wildflowers: Super Cute App Inspired by the Novel Coming up for Air

Inspired by a gorgeous garden scene in Callahan Henry's latest COMING UP FOR AIR (paperback; May 22, 2012; St. Martin’s Griffin) the Wildflower Wishes App is a greeting app created by a dream design team at Chronicle LLC.  The free app comes with five wildflower icons that hold a special meaning (I'm sorry; I love you; Good luck.)  Additional wildflowers can be purchased for $0.99 – and all can be sent to email, other WW friends or Facebook along with a heartfelt personal message – with just the click of a finger!  It is a gentle and simple gesture that can be shared to celebrate graduation, birthdays, anniversaries and more.

About the App:

Patti Callahan Henry Releases WILDFLOWERS Mobile App
Social Game Inspired by Author’s Bestselling Novel COMING UP FOR AIR

ATLANTA – “There is no ordinary. All flowers are extraordinary.”

So says Ellie, the protagonist of New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan Henry’s novel COMING UP FOR AIR. Ellie utters these words because she is devastated that her mother has ripped out the wildflowers she scattered in a carefully manicured garden.

Suppressing her wild nature, Ellie grows up to find herself in a suffocating marriage and an unfulfilling life – until at last she is able to reclaim the spirit of a wildflower.

Now fans of the novel (and anyone who has or appreciates someone with an untamed spirit) can also claim Ellie's spirit and send virtual wildflowers to their friends with the WILDFLOWERS mobile app, available for the iPhone and in the App Store starting May 15. Every wildflower sent through the app has its own meaning and includes a personal message from the sender, allowing users to convey wishes of hope, love, encouragement, inspiration, and more.

With original, "extraordinary" illustrations by award-winning illustrator Stefan Kjartansson, based on a fusion of Japanese woodcuts and Scandinavian design tradition, WILDFLOWERS is the first collaboration between Henry and the creative powers at Armchair Media (armchairmedia.com) and Chronicle (thisischronicle.com).

The first mobile app social game inspired by a novel, WILDFLOWERS expands the universe of COMING UP FOR AIR, currently available in hard cover and due out in paperback on May 22. Through the novel, readers learn an appreciation for a life that blossoms in unexpected ways. The WILDFLOWERS app takes the novel's ecosystem and themes, and brings it to life in the real world.

Henry helped develop the app from conception. A busy mom of three and a wife in addition to a NYT bestselling novelist – not to mention a heavy user of mobile apps herself – she knows well the hectic life of many of her readers, so she wanted the app to be quick and simple to use.

“I told the developers that you should be able to send a wildflower to a friend while standing in the grocery store line,” she says. “It should be that easy to reach out and let a friend or loved one know you are thinking of them.”

WILDFLOWERS is just that easy, passing the grocery line test with flying colors while allowing users to send wildflowers via email, Facebook, or, for those friends who also have WILDFLOWERS installed, app-to-app. An in-app meadow allows users to look back over all the wildflowers they have received, reminders of the vitality that others see in them.

The Book:

Ellie Calvin is caught in a dying marriage, and she knows this. With her beloved daughter away at college and a growing gap between her and her husband, she doesn’t quite seem to fit into her own life. But everything changes when her controlling mother, Lillian, passes away. Ellie sees her ex-boyfriend, Hutch, at the funeral, and learns that he is in charge of a documentary that involved Lillian before her death – and he wants answers to questions that Ellie’s not sure she can face.

As Ellie and Hutch start digging into Lillian’s history, and speaking for the first time in years, Ellie’s closed heart slowly begins to open. Using both a hidden diary that Ellie found in her mother’s things, and a trip to the Summer House, a mysterious and seductive bayside home, they gamble that they can work together and not fall in love again. But in piecing together a decades-old unrequited-love story, they just might uncover the secrets in their own hearts…

Summary From Goodreads:

Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. But the truth is even worse: they’re witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship—or an early grave.

Before her mother died, Cate promised to protect her sisters. But with only six months left to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word... especially after she finds her mother’s diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family’s destruction. Desperate to find alternatives to their fate, Cate starts scouring banned books and questioning rebellious new friends, all while juggling tea parties, shocking marriage proposals, and a forbidden romance with the completely unsuitable Finn Belastra.

If what her mother wrote is true, the Cahill girls aren’t safe. Not from the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood—not even from each other.
