"My Writing Process" with Shannon Duffy, Author of Spectral

My writing process:

Writing a novel for me, all starts with an idea. For Spectral, I wanted to write a book about witches—that was all I knew at first. And then after that an idea came to me one night when I had trouble sleeping. Then I talk about it and think about it for days letting it grow in my mind with the characters and further ideas.

Then I like to write a synopsis of the story. To me, it’s sorta like going on a road trip. You plan your trip all the way to the destination. But…sometimes, if you see something along the way that interests you, you can veer off your original plan. That’s how I do it with writing. I have my synopsis as a guide, but I don’t like to be so anal that I can’t have fun with it and decide on some new elements. Because as I write, new ideas come to me, so I give myself the freedom to go for it.

Along the way, my critique partners and I exchange chapters. This helps to motivate us to keep going and pick up on any problems before getting to the end and having to potentially change a lot. Also, doing it this way, the novel will be edited when you reach the end. I love doing it this way.

After I’ve re-read it again several times, making notes as I go…looking for strings left unanswered, any plot holes etc, I then send it off to my fabulous agent for her to read. She may send notes and I’ll have to make some revisions based on her thoughts.

And then…after that, it heads out into the land of the publishers. This is where you hope and dream and wait oh so (not) patiently, that someone will fall in love with all of your hard work and send you a beautiful contract.

Good luck to all of you writers who are on the journey to publication. And thanks for inviting me to your blog today.

~~Shannon

With new realities surfacing, unexplained powers appearing, and two tempting boys vying for her heart, Jewel battles to learn who she can trust in an ever growing sea of lies, hoping she’ll make it through her seventeenth birthday alive.

Book Review: Redwood Bend by Robyn Carr

Title: Redwood Bend
Author:  Robyn Carr
Reading level:  Adult
Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Size: 337 pages
Release Date: February 28th 2012
Publisher: Mira/Harlequin
Stand Alone or Series:  Virgin River #18
Source: Publisher via NetGalley

First Line: Katie Malone quit her job and packed up her little Vermont House.

Summary (from GoodReads):

Katie Malone and her twin boys' trip along the beautiful mountain roads to Virgin River is stopped short by a tire as flat as her failed romance. To make matters worse, the rain has set in, the boys are hungry and Katie is having trouble putting on a spare. As she stands at the side of the road pondering her next move, she hears a distinct rumble. The sight of the sexy, leather-clad bikers who pull up beside her puts her imagination into overdrive.Dylan Childress and his buddies are on the motorcycle trip of a lifetime. But the sight of a woman in distress stops them in their tracks. And while the guys are checking out her car, she and Dylan are checking out one another. In one brief moment, the world tilts on its axis and any previous plans Katie and Dylan might have had for their futures are left at the side of the road.

My Thoughts:

I'll preface my thoughts by saying that this is the first in the series that I have read...I am not sure if jumping in at book 18 was a detriment...but I honestly didn't feel like I missed out on anything or was lost by not knowing the back stories of the other characters.

In this novel we meet the widowed Katie and her two twin boys as they move to the small town where her brother Conner lives.  She then not only has to worry about settling in and making a new life for herself and her boys but also deal with the attentions of "bad Boy" Dylan.

This book was well written and flowed very nicely. I also loved the rural setting and could easily imagine myself living there.  All of the characters and supporting characters were lovely although not very strong presences.

The romance and subsequent "obstacles" to be overcome were a bit annoying...but I find this typical with a lot of romance books where the only real obstacle is thick-headedness.  I tend to prefer books where there is more of a pressing or dangerous obstacle rather than one that could be solved by a simple conversation or self examination.

All in all this was a very pleasant and enjoyable read.  I can see why this series is so popular...this book was an easy comfortable read...perfect for summer.

Taking the Next Step with L.M. Pruitt

Taking the Next Step

Continuing the Series
~~LM Pruitt

No matter how many series I write, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the Jude Magdalyn series. Jude and the gang were my foray into career writing and I’m so happy other people have read and enjoyed their story so far. It’s not over by a long shot—the latest book in the series, Shades of Blood, will be released later this week. Once again, I’ve done my best to bring local New Orleans vampire lore to the forefront while still delving into the crazy, kooky characters of the Crossroads.

I’m sharing a sample of Shades of Blood with you today to get you in the mood for the upcoming release. I hope everybody enjoys reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

“You ever go on the Vampire Tour here? Probably not.” Duprees pulled at his tie, rolled his shoulders a little. “One of the stories they tell is about the Carter Brothers. And from that story comes another, a story about one of their last victims, a man named Felipe.”

“I’m not liking where this is going.” Theo rested a hand on the small of my back and I bit my lip to keep from hissing at the almost scorching heat. He noticed anyway and almost instantly, it went down to a more manageable temp. “Stop beating around the bush; finish it.”

“Felipe killed over twenty people. Drank their blood. Dissolved the bodies in acid.” Duprees delivered the facts in a cold, clipped voice. A cop’s voice. “His actions were discovered when his parents filed a missing person report and police investigated his address. He’d left his diary behind, the last entry detailing his plans to leave the city after throwing his latest victim into the Mississippi.”

“So he left. That’s good. He’d be pretty up there in age at this point.” My palms were starting to sweat and it had nothing to do with Theo. Even a blind man could see where this was going. I wasn’t blind.

But I really had wanted a peaceful holiday season.

“Jude.” Theo ran his hand up and down my spine. Normally it helped soothe. Right now, it just agitated me even more. “Time for us to face facts.”

“I don’t like this anymore than you do.” Duprees placed the photo of the note on top of the stack of papers, tapping them once. “But when I add two and two and get five, I have to start looking for the crazy missing element somewhere.”

I sat back heavily, raising my eyes to the ceiling. I closed them when I heard the front door slam open and shut in a way that could only mean Danie was back. The sounds of Celia and Mickeal arguing filtered down from the floor above. If I had to guess, Elizabeth had closed herself off in the kitchen, household accounts spread over the table. Rian would be nearby, but far enough away to not annoy.

I sighed, tilted my face down as I opened my eyes. “Well, I guess you could call a blood-thirsty, more than likely hell-bent on revenge vampire, a crazy element.”

Book 2 Jude Magdalyn Series

All I wanted was a little peace and quiet.

Instead, I've got dead Covenant members and a steady stream of letters from the new guy in town. His beverage of choice? A 2002 Merlot, with a shot or two of powerful virgin blood.

On top of that, I'm breaking in a new police liaison, failing at playing matchmaker, and fighting nausea like it's a full time

Did I forget to mention that I've also got enough girls living at the Crossroads to start my own boarding school?

Peace and quiet? Out the window.

Shades of Gray
By L.M. Pruitt
Book 1 Jude Magdalyn Series

Jude Magdalyn Henries lives what many would call an unconventional life.

Orphaned at birth, raised by nuns, a teenage runaway living on the streets... she now earns a living at odd jobs, including one as a fake tarot card reader. Very little about Jude's life appears normal, by any scale.

When she accepts a gig to do a private reading, unconventional takes on an entirely new meaning. Life as she knows it ends when she's thrust into a world she never knew existed-one filled with magic, vampires, and her beloved New Orleans on the verge of an underground war.

To make matters worse, she's got two men in her life vying for attention, Williams and Theo. Both call to a different part of her, but one scares her just a little bit.

Can she step up to the challenges set before her and make the right choices for the greater good?

Excerpt Shades of Desire

“If someone doesn’t get me a lemon in the next five minutes, everyone will suffer. A lot.”
“Jude, I love you. Which is why I can say you’re being just a little overdramatic.” One look at my face and Theo changed his tune. “But then again, you could say pregnancy is dramatic and you’re just getting into the groove.”
“Nice save.” I tried to sit up again. Halfway through the upward movement greasy waves of nausea rolled over me and I eased back down onto the pillow. Strands of black hair clung to my sweaty face and I closed my eyes, exhaling slowly. “Not as nice as that lemon would be right now, but nice.”
“Elizabeth will be here in a moment. No doubt she’ll have a lemon. And tea. And toast.” Theo turned over to face me, laying one hand over my still mostly flat stomach. If you looked close, you could see the smallest of bumps.
I know, because I checked. Every other day or so.
If anybody told me three months ago, that the week before Halloween, I’d be lying in bed with a man who absolutely adored me—even the crazy parts—I’d have asked them what the hell they were smoking. If they’d thrown in being pregnant, I would have punched them in their jaw. Then gone to the store and bought a dozen pregnancy tests and prayed for them all to be negative.
But that was before the Covenant.
In two weeks, I’d gone from being an orphan raised by nuns, to the latest in a long line of only daughters. Women charged with the protection and well-being of hundreds of people with unique powers. Some made flame burn for hours, while others called the wind to knock you flat on your ass. They were a group of people who came together over two-hundred years ago, bound by a prophecy. One with no past, lost in the present, will bring in the future, through gifts of both this world and the next.
And lucky me, I’d passed the job interview.
I’d sent Hart to a muddy, watery grave-literally. Unless something went crazy wrong, he’d stay under the Mississippi until the Final Judgment. Williams ruled the vampires of the city now and kept his distance as much as possible.
And I, Jude Magdalyn Henries, led the Covenant. Maybe I wasn’t terrific at it. But Gillian would be proud.
All things considered, I think I came out with a pretty good deal.

Book Review: The Traitor's Wife by Kathleen Kent & Giveaway!

Title: The Traitor's Wife
Author:  Kathleen Kent
Reading level: Adult
Genre:  Historical Fiction
Size: 296 pages
Release Date:  September 26th 2011
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company
Stand Alone or Series: Stand Alone (but is the prequel to The Heretic's Daughter)
Source: My Personal Library

First Line:  "The young woman stepped from the wagon and turned to face the driver still holding the slackened reins."

Summary (from GoodReads):

I'll not ask you to be mine ... I will never seek to blunt the fury in you, never, and will honour your will as my own. What say you? Can you be a soldier's wife?

New England, 1673. Martha Allen, a young woman reviled by her family because of her refusal to marry, is packed off to be a servant in her cousin's home. She takes charge of the neglected household and annoys everyone around her - including a mysterious Welshman who works for the family, a man whose forceful nature matches her own. As they both gradually let their guard down, a fragile, uneasy friendship grows between the pair. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, a band of assassins, driven by the will of Charles II, charter a ship to the New World. They have a single aim: to capture Thomas Morgan, the killer of Charles I, and bring him back to London where he will face an excruciating death. The Royalists want to see his head on a spike outside the Tower of London.

As Martha begins to fall for the tall Welshman, he reveals a little of his past. It soon becomes clear that his life is in grave danger. As the threat of the assassins grows closer, can Martha find it in herself to be a traitor's wife?

My Thoughts:

I read this book because it is the prequel to The Heretic's Daughter which I read and reviewed last year.  (Read my Review of The Heretic's Daughter.)  I was initially intrigued with the story because I love the Colonial American period and anything to do with the Salem Witch Trials.  This book tells the tale  of Martha and how she met, fell in love and married Thomas Carrier.

I absolutely loved the character development in this story even more than in Kent's previous work.  I really felt like I came to know Martha and Thomas and I adored their independent natures and the way that they lived completely on their own terms  It also helped me to better understand the decisions that they made later in like in The Heretic's Daughter.

The historical pieces of the tale were also well researched and imbued with enough mystery to keep me reading and wondering. And the constant sense of danger as Thomas's previous life begins to catch up with him had me unable to put this one down.

With beautiful prose and a great story of love and independence set on the turbulent backdrop of America in it's early days...this book is one I would definitely recommend to those who love historical fiction and strong characters.

ARC of Thy Neighbor
by Norah Vincent

At thirty-four, Nick Walsh is a broken, deeply cynical man. Since the violent deaths of his parents thirteen years earlier, he has been living alone in his childhood home in the suburban Midwest, drinking, drugging, and debauching himself into oblivion. A measure of solace is provided by his newly found relationship with Monica, a mysterious woman who seems to harbor as many secrets as he does.

Obsessed with understanding the circumstances surrounding his parents' deaths and deranged by his relentless sorrow, Nick begins a campaign of spying on his neighbors via hidden cameras and microphones he has covertly installed in their houses. As he observes with amusement and disbelief all the strange, sad, and terrifying things that his neighbors do to themselves and to one another, and as he, in turn, learns that he is being stalked, he begins to slowly unravel the shocking truth about how and why his parents died.

At once unsettling and moving, humorous and horrifying, Thy Neighbor explores the nature of grief, the potential isolation of suburban life, and who we really are when we think no one is watching. What readers and critics have admired in Norah Vincent's nonfiction is completely unleashed in this vivid and provocative novel.

Audiobook of The Grapes of Wrath
by John Steinbeck

John Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning epic of the Great Depression follows the western movement of one family and a nation in search of work and human dignity. Perhaps the most American of American classics.

The novel focuses on the Joads, a poor family of sharecroppers driven from their Oklahoma home by drought, economic hardship, and changes in financial and agricultural industries. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, and in part because they were trapped in the Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for California. Along with thousands of other "Okies", they sought jobs, land, dignity and a future. When preparing to write the novel, Steinbeck wrote: "I want to put a tag of shame on the greedy bastards who are responsible for this [the Great Depression and its effects]." The book won Steinbeck a large following among the working class, perhaps due to the book's sympathy to the workers' movement and its accessible prose style.

The Grapes of Wrath is frequently read in American high school and college literature classes. A celebrated Hollywood film version, starring Henry Fonda and directed by John Ford, was made in 1940.

Audiobook of Sense and Sensibility
by Jane Austen

'The more I know of the world, the more am I convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love. I require so much!'

Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love—and its threatened loss—the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.

Book Excerpt

I reach to scoop up more water from the river and then pause, staring. There is something odd about my reflection but I cannot make out what, for the water does not run smoothly but in ripples and eddies. I dip my fingers in, breaking the image. But it does not break.

A hand reaches up and closes around my wrist. I choke on a cry of terror, jerking away, but it pulls down—hard—and I lose my footing on the muddy bank, falling headfirst into the rushing waters. The world is strange, blunted, beneath water. I twist, striking out, but cannot quite find my attacker. The hand still holds my wrist in an iron grip. I kick, desperately trying to tear myself away, push my way to the surface. The air burns in my lungs, spots dancing before my eyes. Something touches my throat—a knife? I flail away from it, feel a slicing pain, and abruptly I am released. I find myself on my hands and knees, coughing up water, gentle waves lapping around my chest.

I look up in terror, my hair sending an arc of droplets flying over the quiet waters. The river runs clear. But the birds are silent.

"I swear The Sandcastle Girls were Born Wicked because they lie so much their pants are always Catching Fire and causing their own personal Heat Wave."~~ Barbara @ Basia's Bookshelf

" They say I was Born Wicked because 1. it was the Solstice, 2. an unbearable Heat Wave had taken over That Summer, AND 3. The Beach House where my parents were staying was Catching Fire at the time of my birth. Imagine that. I was seconds old and already knew How to Ruin a Summer Vacation." ~~ Carla @ Cuidado com o Dalmato

"The sight of the rising sun made my smile to myself. I loved watching the sky change from yellow to orange to red, like it was catching fire. It was the morning of solstice, and that summer was one of what felt like a million we had spent at the beach house. This year was different, because we were finally old enough to go without our parents - it was just the Sandcastle Girls - a group of childhood best friends who had all been born during aheat wave. Our mothers told us we were born wicked for putting them through that, but we always knew they secretly loved that they - a group of childhood friends themselves - had given birth so close together, and that we had all ended up best friends. Now, eighteen years later, here we were, spending another summer together just the four of us. We had a rule - no boys allowed. Boys just seemed like a recipe for how to ruin a summer vacation. Although I did notice a couple of cute boys in a house down the beach…this should be a very interesting summer!"~~ Marie @ Ramblings of a Daydreamer

"NO ONE KNEW IT BUT THAT SUMMER, THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS AWAITED THE RISING SUN OF THE SOLSTICE... TO UNLEASH SOMETHING THAT NEARLY KILLED US ALL!" ~~cmriedel @ Riedel Fascination

"How to Ruin a Summer Vacation guide by The Sandcastle Girls: we released a ferocious Heat Wave in The Beach House whose sweltering heat rivaled that of the Rising Sun resulting in hair Catching Fire leaving many ladies quite bald That Summer."~~
