Review Copy Cleanup (Feb 2013) Wrap-up Post #RCCleanup

Hosted by Vicky @ Books, Biscuits and Tea and Celine @ Nyx Book Reviews
What is the Review Copy Cleanup?
RCC is a month-long event in which Celine from Nyx Book Reviews and myself challenge ourselves to read as many review books as we possibly can. We are both notorious for accepting way too many review requests and consequently, our to-be-read piles are pretty daunting. In order to get some extra motivation we invented Review Copy Cleanup. This year we are keeping things simple – no challenges or scheduled Twitter chats, just weekly updates so we can all keep track of each other’s process – and lots of reading, of course. You’re welcome to keep track of the challenge in the way that’s most convenient for you.

Well, if anything my work schedule has only gotten worse this month and my time for reading, reviewing and blogging has been mere hours a week due to working some days as long as 8:45am to  10:30pm.  I only managed to write one review a week this month and have only finished 4 print books and 1 audio book.

Previously read books for which reviews were written:

The Water Witch - Juliet Dark
Hysteria - Megan Miranda
Miracle at the Museum of Broken Hearts - Talli Roland

Books that were read and reviewed in February:

The Fault in Our Stars - John Green

Other Books read in February to be reviewed in March:

Falling for her Fiance  - Cindi Madsen
What The Spell (Audio) - Brittany Geragotelis
Domino Falls - Tananarive Due/Steven Barnes
To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee
Unfurl - Cidney Swanson

Cat Thursday - Boxing Piper Kitty

How can love mend a heart full of hate?

Small town girl, Molly Bennett, moves to Los Angeles where she becomes an outsider while attending Beverly Hills High School. It seems life cannot be any more dreadful. Then one day after school, something magical happens. On a secluded hike in the Hollywood Hills, Molly chases her disobedient mutt and only friend into a hidden cavern. She stumbles upon a strange glimmering gateway that transports her to Arkana, a planet that is the cradle of an advanced human race. There, teenagers navigate amazing flying vehicles, compete in perilous games for glory, and possess supernatural powers. While Molly tries to wrap her mind around this unbelievable discovery, she meets the alluring and mysterious Victor Sorren. He is a Sentinel Apprentice, whose hatred toward people from Earth is beyond understanding. Yet every time Victor unpredictably saves Molly's life, his heart draws closer to hers, no matter how much he tries to fight against it. It further complicates things that their growing friendship is strictly forbidden. Earth people are prohibited in Arkana, yet Molly continues to cross through the portal to Arkana to see Victor. Torn between their double lives, they go down a dangerous path, from where there is no return and multiple endings.

Fields of Elysium is a suspenseful, romantic tale full of forbidden secrets, unimaginable danger, deception, and the never-ending fight for true love.

MARGARET FROM MAINE
Part #1

Charlie King, thirty-three, slid across the backseat of the town car, preferring to climb out on the blind side rather than the house side of the vehicle. As much as he tried to ignore it, he was conscious of his right leg and of the prosthetic that dragged beneath the stump of his thigh. Although he walked well with the prosthetic device—he had himself filmed as part of his therapy and he was pleased with the results—the artificial leg caused a problem occasionally climbing in and out of vehicles. It caused other problems, too, of course, but none that he could not overcome. As always, as he climbed out of the car—his hands on the door opening and hoisting his weight like a man levering out of a small window—he wondered how long it would take before the subject of the leg came up. It al- ways did eventually. Still, he took it as a small challenge, a gauge of his returning health, that people sometimes failed to discover his leg at all. He did not think he was deluded in that.

He stood to his full height, six feet, two inches, and straightened his suit jacket. It had been pleasantly cool in the car’s air- conditioning, but now, in the yard before the farmhouse, he felt the day’s warmth growing. He hated wearing a jacket, or a tie, for that matter, but if the occasion demanded it he did not com- plain. It was better, at least, than a dress uniform, something he had worn both at West Point and for five years in the army. This suit, a deep navy with a trace of a pinstripe through the fabric, fit him well. He put his two thumbs under the front of his pants and ran them to the points of his hips. He did this unconsciously, a tiny tic that he had kept since boyhood.

He bent back into the car and grabbed a small bouquet for Mrs. Kennedy, Margaret, and a stuffed meerkat for the boy, Gordon. The driver—a local man whose name Charlie hadn’t fully caught but sounded like Caleb or Callum—turned slightly to see over his right shoulder.

“Be a minute,” Charlie told him, his head still in the interior. “No rush,” the driver said with a Maine accent. “We have time.”

Charlie closed the car door, self-conscious of the flowers and the meerkat. The flowers and stuffed animal were not strictly protocol, but they had seemed, when he left the Bangor hotel in the morning, like an appropriate ice-breaking gesture. Why not? he thought when he purchased the items in the hotel lobby. He particularly liked the meerkat, which seemed to take an interest in the ride out to the farm, its button eyes glowing with the lovely spring scenery as if actually alive. He tucked the meerkat under his left elbow, the same hand that held the flowers.

On the short walk up to the porch, he smelled the heavy odor of cows and manure. He also smelled lilacs and something less familiar that he could not name. He turned a little to see if he could spot its origin, but he came away with the general impression of a farm and little else. He saw sheep fencing and a faded red barn; three Barred Rock chickens pecking in the field beyond the barn; and black and white cattle—Holsteins, he thought—grazing on the spring grass.

When he turned back, an older man stood on the porch, watching him.

Q&A and Giveaway with Rachel Deagan, Author of The Prophecy

      1. Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?

No. I wanted to be an actress and an Olympic Equestrian Rider first. Funny thing is, in fourth grade I wrote my first ‘book’. It was about horses. Although, the equestrian dream has fizzled over the years, I do think my love of acting helps greatly in developing and feeling out the characters I write.

      2. What authors inspire you?

As far as authors go, I love Cassandra Claire’s flare for characterization and storytelling. Although, I didn’t start reading her work until after my first book, Caged Moon, was into the editing phase. My original inspiration stemmed mostly from Maggie Steivater’s Shiver, Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely Series. Julie Kagawa, and her Iron Fey Series are definitely a favorite of mine now.

      3. Is your family supportive of your writing?

Yes, once my parents realized the seriousness of my writing, they became some of my most forefront advocates. My boys two little boys are also probably my best cheer squad.

      4. Do your characters talk to you when you’re writing?

All the time. They never shut up and sometimes we even argue when they want to go in a direction that I hadn’t planned. The happened numerous times over the course of writing, The Prophecy.  They told me to throw out my book outline numerous times. I finally gave up on that. ;)

      5. Do you like it quiet or do you need noise when you write?

It honestly depends on my mood.  Sometimes it’s hard for me to focus with music on, because I end up listening to it instead of zoning in on the writing, but sometimes it helps set the mood if I can put into the ‘background’ and focus. It can aid the emotional mood of a scene. If I do have music on, it’s usually non-vocal thematic music from movies.

      6. Are you currently writing anything?

Yes! The Prophecy is the first book of a series. There is a book two in the works. I’m also finishing up Book two to my Caged Moon Series, which will be out shortly. Right now, we’re looking at an early April release date.

      7. What do you do when you’re not writing?

I have two little boys that keep me pretty busy, but when I do find time to myself, I always enjoy watching a good movie/tv show. I’m hooked on The Vampire Diaries, and Supernatural. I also love reading, and have recently taken up Zumba.

“The cards tell me of the children of the stars.”

Jacey thinks her life is worthless, when she finds herself in a psychiatric hospital after a failed attempt to end her life; her wounds miraculously healed. Devin, who claims to kill on touch, is also there. When Michael arrives, bearing telekinetic powers, he insists the government, and an even darker, more powerful force, wants them dead.

In a desperate attempt to escape for their lives, the three teens find they must confront an even greater adversary, themselves - and with a prophecy forced upon them, they must find a way to accept their fate, or rebel together, as one.

Trees swept by Devin as he ran. Their gangly tendrils grasped at his clothes, tearing scratches at his skin. He almost welcomed it. The ache to have physical contact with something, anything, burned as a residual longing deep inside of him, but that was what the men wanted. They knew his touch would kill, and he would not fall to that level.

It hurt, knowing he had to always stay away, but he refused to care. No one gave a crap about him anyway. The abuse and torture from Lament and his crew proved that was true, but they would not break him.

He would not become their weapon. They could go to hell.

The sound of footsteps moved behind him, and he quickened his pace, scrambling as best he could through the darkened branches. Sweat broke across his brow, and his lungs heaved for air. Even in the cool, night breeze, the gray tee shirt he wore clung to his chest, hot and damp. It had seemed like hours since he had broken free of Lament’s hell-hole prison of a lab, and he had no idea where he was headed. All he knew was that he had to run. He couldn’t live like that. He would not become a monster.

If only he could find a way to blend in and hide amongst the canopy of darkness, perhaps the idiots would pass him by unseen. Maybe he could be free.

He couldn’t go back. He would rather die.

Rachel grew up in small town Massachusetts where she spent most of her time writing about strange paranormal creatures instead of paying attention in class. She has always been considered the 'dreamy' one with her head in the clouds. She now lives in Nevada with her two sons, a cat, and a rat named Sam.

Book Review: Hysteria by Megan Miranda

      Size: 336 pages

Mallory killed her boyfriend, Brian. She can't remember the details of that night but everyone knows it was self-defense, so she isn't charged. But Mallory still feels Brian's presence in her life. Is it all in her head? Or is it something more? In desperate need of a fresh start, Mallory is sent to Monroe, a fancy prep school where no one knows her . . . or anything about her past. But the feeling follows her, as do her secrets. Then, one of her new classmates turns up dead. As suspicion falls on Mallory, she must find a way to remember the details of both deadly nights so she can prove her innocence-to herself and others. In another riveting tale of life and death, Megan Miranda's masterful storytelling brings readers along for a ride to the edge of sanity and back again.

My mother hid the knife block.

I was expecting great things from Megan Miranda's latest after loving Fracture and Hysteria did not disappoint.  The setting (private boarding school out in the boonies) may sound a bit cliche...but I assure you that it works completely.  Though I admit that I may have a thing for small town/rural New England settings. Miranda's prose and dialogue flow effortlessly and are completely believable for a young adult read without feeling in the least bit "dumbed down."

The story unfolds a few months after Brian's death and is presented as a combination of  the present mixed in with Mallory's flashbacks/memories of what happened the night Brian died and the weeks leading up to it.  I love how we slowly learned the story of what happened that night as the book progressed while we were simultaneously trying to figure out what was happening at the boarding school.

Mallory is a typical teen  - stupid at times but very likeable. Reid is...well...amazing...anyone looking for a new book boyfriend? I nominate him!  Miranda keeps us guessing with the supporting characters: who can Mallory trust and who isn't what he/she appears?

The action and suspense grab the reader from the start and never lets up.  The pacing is perfect, pulling the reader in and keeping one captivated until the very end.  I couldn't put this one down...in fact I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish this one because I just had to know what happened.  I think you'll need to know too...

Hysteria was spooky and mysterious and still managed to squeeze in a few swoon worthy moments.  Trust me, you don't want to miss this one...
