Synopsis:
Rachel and Alice are an extremely rare kind of identical twins-so identical that even their aunt and uncle, whom they've lived with since their parents passed away, can't tell them apart. But the sisters are connected in a way that goes well beyond their surfaces: when one experiences pain, the other exhibits the exact same signs of distress. So when one twin mysteriously disappears, the other immediately knows something is wrong-especially when she starts experiencing serious physical traumas, despite the fact that nobody has touched her. As the search commences to find her sister, the twin left behind must rely on their intense bond to uncover the truth. But is there anyone around her she can trust, when everyone could be a suspect? And ultimately, can she even trust herself?
Master storyteller Jessica Warman will keep readers guessing when everything they see-and everything they are told-suddenly becomes unreliable in this page-turning literary thriller.
My Thoughts
I've wanted to read this book since I first heard about it. I've always had a fascination with twins...most likely because my younger sisters are identical twins... and as a child I was always intrigued by their relationship. I was thrilled to get my hands on Beautiful Lies and could not wait to dig in.
The writing style and pacing were perfect: the prose descriptive enough to satisfy my need for some level of lyricism yet paced so quickly that one never for a moment felt that the book dragged.
Once I picked it up, I could not put it down. I was completely confused and mystified throughout. I sometimes felt about as mad as I suspected the main character was! Perhaps that is the best compliment that I can give this read! I was completely swept up and so immersed in the read that I started feeling crazy! To be honest. I am still not 100% sure of what really happened...and I suspect that's as it's meant to be. I'll clue you in that our main character is not the most reliable of narrators...
I don't want to say much about this plot because each delicious twist and turn needs to be discovered for itself but trust me when I say that this was a definite can't put it down... up reading until all hours of the night...sort of book.
